A Personal Introduction to my “90%”

And the reasons why I am who I am today

Growing up in the projects, a term commonly used to describe low-income housing, it comes as no surprise that my life has led me to the nonprofit sector. After spending nearly 30 years in the financial industry, I often heard, "There's no profit in nonprofits? How are you going to make it?" However, two pivotal moments in my life revealed the profound impact nonprofits had on me.

I hold degrees in Business Administration and Education, and I am certified as an Equity Trainer. My transition from the corporate world to founding POAC Succeed highlights my dedication to fostering inclusiveness and connection. I proudly identify as a Community Advocate, Game Changer, Change Agent, and Nonprofit Leader.

I collaborate with schools and businesses to empower individuals to break the cycle of bullying, embrace acceptance, and engage in courageous conversations. Through understanding, open dialogue, and inclusion, I am committed to building healthier communities and a brighter future for our children. My work is a testament to the transformative power of connection, purpose, and the belief that everyone has a vital role in creating lasting impact.

In 1984, our family suffered a significant loss when my sister Tonya succumbed to Sickle Cell Anemia.

The devastation was overwhelming, but local nonprofits rallied to support us during our time of need.

Our family was able to profit—not from dollars and cents—but from the outpouring of love and support, allowing us to navigate that difficult period.

Growing up, I watched my sister Tonya build relationships in a way that deeply inspired me. Her warmth and ability to make others feel valued left a lasting impression. Born with Sickle Cell Anemia, Tonya faced immense challenges but lived with love and purpose. She passed away at just 16 years old, and I was only 9.

That day changed me. I felt a deep connection to her and a calling to carry on her legacy—bringing people together and ensuring everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. For nearly four decades, I’ve devoted myself to that mission.

More recently, my son Jaxson has inspired me to go even further. After suffering a spinal cord injury, Jaxson’s determination to “keep moving forward” his words to the community of supporters who have been praying for his recovery, has been a powerful reminder of the strength found in adversity. His perseverance fuels my drive to make an even greater impact, helping others overcome their challenges and find community and purpose.

POAC (People of All Communities) Succeed is a reflection of both Tonya’s and Jaxson’s impact. It’s my way of honoring them by fostering connection and belonging, continuing the work they inspire me to do every day of my life.

During uncertain Christmas times in the Grayson home, limited resources made it challenging for our mother to provide gifts.

It was a nonprofit that stepped in, enabling our family to experience the joy of Christmas morning and create the memories every child deserves.

These experiences taught my brothers and me valuable lessons instilled by our mother—resilience, passion for others, the importance of serving, humility, and generosity.

These lessons formed the foundation for my passion for People of All Communities Succeed Organization, also known as POAC Succeed, a nonprofit organization. Despite being in its early stages, POAC Succeed has already impacted thousands of students and adults, benefiting from what we call "learning from the 90%," emphasizing mutual support and allyship during the good and challenging times.

My hope for POAC Succeed is that our mission will ignite a flame for change that spreads far and wide, where we can learn compassion and generosity for those around us. My name is Jamie Grayson, the Executive Director and Founder of POAC Succeed, and this is my story.
